Ian Slater
Ian Slater was an Australian-born Canadian novelist and political scientist whose military thrillers draw on professional knowledge of intelligence and international affairs. WWIII: Darpa Alpha: A Novel joined his World War III sequence through Presidio Press in 2007. The story returns to General Douglas Freeman, placing a classified weapons project and a mission near the Sino-Russian border inside the continuing geopolitical conflict. Slater served with the Australian Joint Intelligence Bureau before teaching political science for the University of British Columbia and working with the journal Pacific Affairs. Intelligence experience and academic study thus provided foundations for novels concerned with command decisions, strategic alliances, and rapidly changing technology. Earlier World War III books established recurring military figures and large-scale scenarios, so Darpa Alpha extends an existing fictional history instead of beginning an isolated adventure. The novel represents the technical-thriller side of Slater's bibliography, where imagined crises are organized through institutions, field operations, and competing national calculations.
