J. A. Hornbuckle

J. A. Hornbuckle creates contemporary stories about reinvention, attraction, and the social consequences of becoming more visible. Human Hieroglyphix begins a sequence named after the tattoo studio shared by its connected cast. English professor Leila McCarthy has spent years trying not to attract attention, but a notebook of personal goals and a visit to studio co-owner Dex Nelson mark a deliberate change. Dex initially fails to recognize her away from work, and their growing attachment unfolds while people around Leila resist her confidence. The studio gives the sequence a recurring community where private decisions leave marks on friendships as well as romantic relationships. Hornbuckle continued that world in additional Human Hieroglyphix stories and also developed the Grantham and Hellion Motorcycle Club sequences. Across those books, workplaces and chosen communities link individual couples, while a character's attempt to revise an old identity creates the conflict that carries each relationship forward.
