J. B. Priestley worked across English fiction, drama, broadcasting, and essays, joining social observation to accessible comedy. The Good Companions, published in 1929, follows three people who leave unsatisfying lives and encounter a struggling touring concert party called the Dinky Doos. Its panorama of provincial England won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and established Priestley with a wide readership. When We Are Married, first staged in 1938, turns a civic celebration in a Yorkshire town into farce when three respectable couples learn that their shared wedding ceremony may not have been legally valid. The play uses their panic to expose vanity, class assumptions, and unequal marriages while preserving the momentum of an ensemble comedy. Priestley drew on Bradford roots and his experience of British public life throughout both works. One is an expansive road novel about fellowship and performance; the other compresses social criticism into a single crowded evening onstage.
