John Arbuthnot combined medicine, mathematics, satire, and court service in Queen Anne’s London. Born in Scotland and educated at St Andrews, he became a physician and joined the circle of Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope. The History of John Bull grew from political pamphlets issued in 1712 during debate over ending the War of the Spanish Succession. Through allegory, Arbuthnot represented England as John Bull and other European powers as figures disputing trade, alliances, and national interest. John Bull endured far beyond that controversy as a personification of England. Arbuthnot also joined the Scriblerus Club’s mockery of pretension and false learning while contributing studies of probability and medicine.
