J.D. Vaughn is the joint pen name of American writers Julia Durango and Tracie Vaughn Zimmer. The Second Guard opens their fantasy series in Tequende, a matrilineal kingdom where second-born children train for service to the queen. Fifteen-year-old Talimendra Sanchez Kalloryn enters the Alcazar from the Sun Guild and forms a close alliance with recruits Zarif of the Moon Guild and Chey of the Earth Guild. Disney’s teaching guide confirms that Vaughn represents two collaborators: Durango, a former school librarian, and Zimmer, an English teacher and award-winning poet.
