J.D. Vaughn
J.D. Vaughn is the joint pen name of American writers Julia Durango and Tracie Vaughn Zimmer. The Second Guard opens their fantasy series in Tequende, a matrilineal kingdom where second-born children train for service to the queen. Fifteen-year-old Talimendra Sanchez Kalloryn enters the Alcazar from the Sun Guild and forms a close alliance with recruits Zarif of the Moon Guild and Chey of the Earth Guild. Their training, tournament, and discovery of political secrets test both loyalty and the social order they have inherited. Disney-Hyperion published The Second Guard in 2015, and Kirkus praised its worldbuilding, ethical questions, and culturally varied setting. Disney’s teaching guide confirms that Vaughn represents two collaborators: Durango, a former school librarian, and Zimmer, an English teacher and award-winning poet. Their collaboration shapes the novel’s balance of action, institutional history, and character perspective. The Second Guard presents coming of age as a decision about which principles deserve obedience when official rules conflict with justice.
