Jakob Ejersbo

Jakob Ejersbo was a Danish novelist and journalist whose fiction drew on life in Aalborg and on childhood years spent in Tanzania. Liberty is the concluding novel of his Africa trilogy, alongside Exile and Revolution, although each volume can be read independently. The book follows Christian, the son of Danish expatriates, and Marcus, a Tanzanian household worker, across a friendship marked by unequal opportunities and competing dreams. Its broad cast examines aid culture, money, race, and belonging during the 1980s. Ejersbo trained as a journalist and made his literary debut with Fuga, coauthored with Morten Alsinger. His breakthrough novel Nordkraft portrayed marginal lives in Aalborg and received the Danish booksellers' Golden Laurels. He completed the large body of material behind the Africa books shortly before his death in 2008; his publisher helped prepare them for posthumous publication. Liberty later received the 2010 DR Novel Prize and was adapted for television.
