James Alton James pursued historical scholarship concentrated on the political development of the early Midwest. He taught history at Northwestern University and wrote extensively about George Rogers Clark, western settlement, and the making of state institutions. Constitution and Admission of Iowa Into the Union appeared in 1900 as number seven of the eighteenth series of Johns Hopkins University Studies in Historical and Political Science. The study traces Iowa from territorial government through constitutional debate and statehood, giving particular attention to land claims, convention proceedings, and the competing boundaries proposed for the new state. Its compact form reflects the monograph series in which it appeared, while its footnotes and documentary approach place it within professional historical scholarship of the period. James later edited Clark’s papers and produced a biography of him, continuing the regional emphasis already visible in this Iowa study. The book remains a focused account of how constitutional choices accompanied admission to the Union.
