Allen Johnson taught American history at Yale and served as biographer and editor of the Dictionary of American Biography. Union and Democracy surveys the United States from the end of the Revolution through the War of 1812, placing constitutional development beside commerce, diplomacy, settlement, and party conflict. First published in 1915, it became part of the Riverside History series devoted to the United States. Jefferson and his colleagues, published in 1921 for the Chronicles of America series, narrows the focus to Thomas Jefferson’s administrations and the political figures who shaped the era around him. Johnson writes institutional history through individuals without reducing national change to presidential biography. His editorial career sharpened that balance, joining attention to documentary evidence with concise portraits of public actors. Together, Jefferson and his colleagues and Union and Democracy show his sustained interest in the early republic, from the uncertain confederation to an expanding federal nation. They remain useful examples of early twentieth-century American historical synthesis and of Johnson’s role in large collaborative history projects.
