James Ephraim McGirt
James Ephraim McGirt was an African American poet, editor, publisher, and businessman born in North Carolina in 1874. His education included Bennett College, after which he taught and built a literary career through both books and periodical publishing. After moving to Philadelphia, he established McGirt's Magazine, which carried poetry, fiction, commentary, and material about Black achievement. The McGirt Publishing Company issued The Triumphs of Ephraim in 1907 as short fiction rather than verse. Its title character and other narratives reflect McGirt's interest in aspiration, education, work, family, and the social pressures faced by African Americans in his era. Some stories draw on North Carolina settings and memories, linking his later publishing life to his southern background. The Triumphs of Ephraim documents the range of a writer often remembered for poetry and shows McGirt using independent publishing to reach a national readership.
