James George Frazer

James George Frazer became an influential Scottish classicist, folklorist, and comparative scholar of religion during anthropology's formative years. Studies in Greek Scenery, Legend and History brings together selections from his commentary on Pausanias, pairing ancient descriptions of Greece with historical, archaeological, and mythological explanation. Frazer spent much of his academic life at Trinity College, Cambridge, and became widely known for The Golden Bough, his large comparative study of ritual and belief. His Pausanias scholarship was a separate major undertaking, involving translation, textual study, and extensive notes on places described by the second-century traveller. Studies in Greek Scenery, Legend and History makes part of that research available in a more compact form. The book moves through landscapes as records of cultural memory, connecting temples, roads, cities, and local traditions. Frazer's interpretations belong to the scholarship of his time, while his command of classical sources gives the volume continuing value as intellectual history.
