Jan Grue is a Norwegian writer and University of Oslo professor whose work spans fiction, nonfiction, children’s literature, and academic writing. I Live a Life Like Yours is a memoir about disability, family, scholarship, and the social stories imposed on bodies that differ from an assumed norm. Grue moves between childhood medical records, education, travel, marriage, fatherhood, and intellectual life, showing how expectations can shape memory without determining a person’s future. The book first appeared in Norway in 2018, won the Norwegian Critics Prize for Literature, and was nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize. FSG Originals published the English edition, translated from Norwegian by B. L. Crook, under the full title I Live a Life Like Yours: A Memoir. Grue’s prose joins personal detail to reflection on art, language, and public structures. The result is neither a triumph narrative nor a clinical case history, but a careful account of ordinary ambitions lived within a body that strangers repeatedly interpret for him.
