Basic Witches, written with Jess Zimmerman, is a joke that is also serious: witchcraft as a way of taking your own life in hand, with spells that are mostly rituals and a great deal about not waiting for permission. Saxena is a staff writer covering food, and her reporting on restaurant labour, on the companies that recruit women into selling for them, and on what the wellness industry is really selling has been among the sharper work in that area. Before it she co-wrote a parody magazine about American fathers, which is the same joke told entirely straight.
