Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio is a French and Mauritian writer whose novels, essays, and memoirs examine displacement, colonial history, family memory, and encounters with landscape. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2008 after a career that began with The Interrogation and expanded across fiction, travel writing, and cultural reflection. The African is his compact autobiographical account of leaving France as a child to join his father, a doctor working in Nigeria. Rather than offering a simple portrait, the book revisits distance within the family and the bodily intensity of a childhood environment that changed his imagination. Originally published in French as L’Africain, the English edition was translated by C. Dickson and issued by David R. Godine. The African makes a private history part of Le Clézio’s wider concern with inherited identities and unequal worlds. Its restrained form lets sensation, recollection, and later understanding remain in productive tension rather than resolving the past into a single judgment.
