Jennifer Altman writes variations on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, building new circumstances around Elizabeth Bennet, Fitzwilliam Darcy, and the social world of the original novel. To Conquer Pride was her debut and first appeared independently in 2018, followed by a 2019 paperback edition. The story begins months after the proposal at Hunsford, when Darcy and Elizabeth have had time to reconsider their judgments but have not resolved their misunderstanding. A winter encounter places them together again and lets Altman examine apology, restraint, family influence, and the difficulty of speaking plainly. The book is a Pride and Prejudice variation rather than a sequel centered on new descendants. Altman later wrote Faults of Understanding, another Austen-inspired novel, continuing her focus on familiar characters under altered pressures. To Conquer Pride reflects the variation tradition's interest in close character study: the recognizable destination remains, but changes in timing and circumstance create a different path toward mutual understanding.
