Jeremy Dronfield brings training as a former archaeologist to his work as a biographer, historian and novelist. The Boy Who Followed His Father into Auschwitz: A True Story of Family and Survival reconstructs the experiences of Viennese upholsterer Gustav Kleinmann and his teenage son Fritz. Dronfield based the account on Gustav's secret diary, family testimony, and archival research. His documentary approach sets individual records alongside a wider family history. Dronfield also wrote Beyond the Call with Lee Trimble and Dr James Barry: A Woman Ahead of Her Time with Michael du Preez. His work combines sustained research with narrative biography, often following families through state persecution, separation, and survival. Fritz and Kurt, a later retelling for younger readers illustrated by David Ziggy Greene, returns to the Kleinmann family and brings Fritz's brother Kurt into the foreground.
