Heather Dune Macadam researches and writes women's Holocaust history. In 999, she reconstructs the lives of nearly one thousand young Jewish women sent from Slovakia to Auschwitz on the first official Jewish transport to the camp in March 1942. Her account draws on survivor interviews as well as consultation with historians, witnesses, and relatives of the deportees. Caroline Moorehead contributed the foreword to the Citadel edition, which became a PEN America Literary Award finalist. Macadam later wrote, produced, and directed the related documentary 999: The Forgotten Girls, extending the research into another form of historical testimony.
