Jessica Keener
Jessica Keener examines family strain, memory, and the ways music can hold a life together in her novels and short stories. Night Swim, her debut novel, centers on sixteen-year-old Sarah Kunitz in suburban Boston in 1970. Sarah grows up as the only daughter among four siblings in a prosperous household whose polished exterior conceals instability. She and her older brother Peter find refuge in music as family relationships become increasingly difficult. Keener worked on the manuscript across many years, publishing excerpts before the complete novel appeared. The Story Plant first released it during 2012; Story Plant Gold later produced a second edition distributed by Simon & Schuster in 2023. Night Swim follows Sarah’s effort to regain direction after a family tragedy, while its period setting places private upheaval against a changing cultural landscape. Keener later published the story collection Women in Bed and the novel Strangers in Budapest, continuing her attention to displacement and intimate bonds.
