Joan He grew up in Philadelphia and trained in oil painting before deciding that storytelling suited her better. She studied psychology and East Asian languages and civilizations at Pennsylvania. The Ones We're Meant to Find, published by Roaring Brook Press in May 2021, alternates between Cee, stranded three years on an abandoned island with no memory of how she got there, and her sister Kasey, sixteen years old and easier with logic than with people, living in one of the eco-cities raised above a ruined climate. It became a bestseller. Her debut was the court fantasy Descendant of the Crane, and she followed the science fiction with the Kingdom of Three duology, Strike the Zither and Sound the Gong, which reworks the Chinese classic of the Three Kingdoms.
