Joey Goebel made music and outsider identity the engine of his first novel, The Anomalies. MacAdam/Cage published the American edition in 2003; editions outside the United States have also appeared as The Freaks. The story brings together five unlikely musicians in a small Kentucky town, including an elderly woman in punk clothing, a gifted child, and an Iraqi immigrant. Their unclassifiable band mixes power pop, new wave, metal, and punk, turning performance into both refuge and protest. Goebel's own experience as a singer, guitarist, and songwriter in Kentucky bands gives the satire a practical knowledge of rehearsals, ambition, and local music scenes. Beneath its comic exaggeration, the novel asks who gets labeled normal and how commercial culture packages rebellion. Those concerns recur in Goebel's later fiction about art and celebrity.
