Johann Konrad Ammann trained as a Swiss physician and became an early and influential writer on teaching speech to deaf people. The Talking Deaf Man is the English form of his Latin Surdus loquens, first issued in Amsterdam in 1692. Ammann described methods based on close attention to breath, voice, tongue, lips, and the physical formation of individual sounds. He treated speech as a system that could be analyzed and taught, rejecting the assumption that it remained permanently unavailable to a person born deaf. A later work, Dissertatio de loquela, extended his discussion of speech. Ammann's oral method belongs to a historical approach that differs from modern recognition of sign languages and Deaf culture, so its influence and its limitations both matter. The Talking Deaf Man remains significant in histories of speech instruction because it records an early attempt to connect anatomy, observation, and repeated practice within a practical teaching method.
