Herbert Eugene Bolton was an American historian whose research helped define the Spanish Borderlands as a field linking the histories of North and Latin America. At Berkeley, he emphasized institutions and contact across imperial frontiers. The American Historical Review published The Mission as a Frontier Institution in the Spanish-American Colonies in 1917 for scholarly readers, presenting his influential interpretation of the mission system within Spanish expansion. Notes on Clark’s “The Beginnings of Texas” places him in scholarly debate over early Texas history. The Beginnings Of Mission Nuestra Senora Del Refugio likewise reflects his close use of colonial records to reconstruct an institution and region.
