John Cordy Jeaffreson

John Cordy Jeaffreson (1831-1901) was an English novelist, antiquary, and archivist born in Framlingham, Suffolk, and educated at Pembroke College, Oxford. He built a following with a series of readable anecdotal histories of the professions, among them A Book about Doctors (1860) and A Book about Lawyers (1867). In later life he inspected historical records for the Historical Manuscripts Commission, reporting on old manuscripts across England. He also wrote fiction and a much-debated study of Byron.
