John Earle

John Earle (c. 1601–1665) was an English cleric and scholar, educated at Christ Church and Merton College, Oxford, and admired in his own day as much for his conversation as for his pen. In 1641 he was appointed chaplain and tutor to the future Charles II, and he followed the exiled court through the Interregnum. After the Restoration he was consecrated Bishop of Worcester in 1662 and moved to the see of Salisbury the next year. Microcosmography, written in his twenties and published without his name, is the work that has kept his reputation alive.
