About the author

John Earle

John Earle (c. 1601–1665) was an English cleric and scholar, educated at Christ Church and Merton College, Oxford, and admired in his own day as much for his conversation as for his pen. In 1641 he was appointed chaplain and tutor to the future Charles II, and he followed the exiled court through the Interregnum.
