John Hill was an eighteenth-century English writer, botanist, and physician whose enormous output ranged from natural history to medical and public controversy. Hypochondriasis A Practical Treatise preserves an abbreviated form of his 1766 medical work, which discusses symptoms then grouped under hypochondriasis and proposes a regimen based on diet, exercise, and contemporary remedies. The Story Of Elizabeth Canning Considered belongs to a very different dispute. Printed for M. Cooper in 1753, the pamphlet challenges Henry Fielding’s interpretation of the celebrated Elizabeth Canning case and answers arguments advanced in his account. Reading the two titles together reveals Hill’s characteristic movement between professional authority and argumentative print culture. His medical treatise now survives in historical editions, while the Canning work is a short legal and social controversy rather than fiction. Both shortened titles compress their original typography and subtitles. Hill’s authorship connects them, but their subjects, purposes, and publication contexts should remain clearly distinct.
