John Newton, William Cowper

John Newton (1725 to 1807) was an English clergyman and former slave trader whose conversion inspired 'Amazing Grace.' His friend William Cowper (1731 to 1800) was among the most admired poets of his day. Together at Olney they created a landmark of English hymn writing.
