John William Mackail was a Scottish classical scholar, poet, civil servant, and influential interpreter of Greek and Latin literature. Thermopylae began his public literary career as the Newdigate Prize poem for 1881 and was printed by Blackwell and Simpkin, Marshall. The Progress of Poesy was the inaugural lecture he delivered at Oxford’s Sheldonian Theatre on 10 March 1906 when he became Professor of Poetry. Pope belongs to a later phase of his criticism: it was the Leslie Stephen Lecture delivered at Cambridge on 10 May 1919. These three compact works therefore represent different occasions and genres, not chapters of a single book. Mackail also wrote a major life of William Morris, translated classical poetry, served in national education administration, and later led the British Academy. His exact lecture and prize-poem contexts help explain the formal, compressed character of Pope, The Progress of Poesy, and Thermopylae, while distinguishing their original issues from later collected appearances.
