Jonathan P. Brazee
Jonathan P. Brazee draws on service as a retired United States Marine Corps colonel in his American military science fiction. Captain is the fourth volume in his United Federation Marine Corps series, continuing the career of Ryck Lysander as he moves into company command and confronts the demands of leadership beyond personal battlefield reputation. Brazee's military background informs a catalogue concerned with training, rank, command decisions, and the institutional pressures surrounding combat. The sequence begins with Recruit and advances through Officer and Lieutenant before Captain, allowing the protagonist's responsibilities to change across successive stages of service. Brazee has also written the Women of the United Federation Marines books, the Return of the Marines series, and other speculative projects, sometimes in collaboration with fellow authors. His work received recognition through nominations connected to military science fiction, including the Nebula-nominated story Weaponized Math. Captain exemplifies his career-based approach to the genre, in which promotion brings ethical and organizational problems as well as new tactical authority.
