Jonathan Rose is a historian of reading and publishing whose scholarship connects books with the people and institutions that give them public influence. The Literary Churchill studies Winston Churchill as an author, reader, and performer as well as a statesman. Yale University Press published the biography, which traces Churchill's dealings with editors, publishers, agents, and censors while examining the literary models behind his speeches, memoirs, and histories. Rose is William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of History at Drew University. His other major work includes The Intellectual Life of the British Working Classes, and he has helped develop book-history scholarship through editorial and professional roles. In this study, his attention remains on how reading and writing shaped political imagination and public action.
