Bill Janovitz

Bill Janovitz is a musician, songwriter, and biographer whose writing examines the people and recordings behind American popular music. Leon Russell traces the Oklahoma-born pianist, singer, songwriter, arranger, and producer from his early studio work through his solo career and later revival. Hachette Books published the biography in 2023, using the Master of Space and Time nickname to frame the place Russell holds in modern rock history. Janovitz follows Russell’s work with the Wrecking Crew, his collaborations and touring, his Shelter Records period, and the changing reputation of his recordings. The account also places Russell within the networks that connected session musicians, songwriters, performers, and producers across several decades. Janovitz brings a working musician’s perspective to that history; he is known as a founding member of Buffalo Tom and has also written about the Rolling Stones. The resulting biography treats Russell’s career as both an individual story and a route through wider changes in rock, country, gospel, and studio culture.
