Jørgen Moe
Jørgen Moe helped establish Norwegian folklore as both a field of study and a national literary resource. Educated in theology, he travelled through rural districts collecting oral tales, songs, and customs before serving as a clergyman and eventually bishop of Kristiansand. His enduring collaboration with Peter Christen Asbjørnsen produced Norske Folkeeventyr, a landmark collection whose carefully shaped language retained the directness and rhythm of spoken storytelling. Moe also wrote poetry and children’s literature, bringing the observer’s attention of a collector to landscapes, animals, and family life. The Birch and the Star, and Other Storie represents English-language access to that wider body of writing, including work associated with childhood and the natural world. His method was neither simple transcription nor free invention: he compared variants, selected telling details, and sought a literary form that still sounded rooted in oral performance. The book belongs beside the folktale collections that made his partnership with Asbjørnsen central to nineteenth-century Norwegian letters.
