Maurice Hewlett
Maurice Hewlett was an English novelist, essayist, and poet whose work ranged across travel writing, historical romance, short fiction, drama, and verse. Born in 1861, he trained in law and held a government records post before literature became his principal career. Earthwork out of Tuscany and Little Novels of Italy reflect his sustained engagement with Italian places and culture. The Forest Lovers established his reputation as a writer of medieval romance, a field he revisited in The Fool Errant and The Life And Death Of Richard Yea-And-Nay. Gudrid the Fair draws on Norse saga material. His poetry appears in Helen Redeemed and Other Poems, while Lore of Proserpine moves through folklore and personal reflection. In a Green Shade gathers country commentary, and Love and Lucy broadens this group with a romantic novel about the emotional lives hidden within respectable domestic arrangements. The Harry Ransom Center preserves manuscripts for his essays, short stories, poems, and novels.
