Kären M. Hess

Kären M. Hess was a criminal justice educator and textbook author whose work emphasized clear instruction grounded in law-enforcement practice. Criminal Investigation became a long-running survey of investigative principles, from scene management and evidence handling to interviews, reporting, legal limits, and specialized offenses. Later editions continued after Hess's death through collaboration with Christine Hess Orthmann and Henry Lim Cho. Cengage's twelfth edition, published with a 2022 copyright, credits all three authors and updates the field-based approach with current research and technology. Hess also coauthored textbooks on juvenile justice, constitutional law, policing, and management and supervision in law enforcement, creating a connected body of classroom material for criminal justice students. Her role is therefore both foundational and collaborative: the structure and pedagogical voice associated with her name persist while later specialists revise examples and professional practice.
