Kären M. Hess was a criminal justice educator and textbook author whose work emphasized clear instruction grounded in law-enforcement practice. Criminal Investigation became a long-running survey of investigative principles, from scene management and evidence handling to interviews, reporting, legal limits, and specialized offenses. Later editions continued after Hess's death through collaboration with Christine Hess Orthmann and Henry Lim Cho.
