Karen Russell

Karen Russell lets the uncanny enter emotional situations without dissolving their human stakes. Stag follows Stan Dobrev, a man facing divorce who marks the change with a solitary gathering and an encounter involving Greeley, a tortoise with an unexpectedly disruptive presence. The work appeared in 2022 through Amazon Original Stories as part of the Trespass collection, a group of stories by different authors about boundaries and wild intrusions. Russell's contribution uses the compact form to connect loneliness, masculine performance, domestic upheaval, and the strange demands of another creature. The premise carries comic absurdity, yet Stan's uncertainty gives it an undercurrent of loss. Adam Verner performs the audio version, which runs a little over an hour. Stag stands apart from Russell's longer collections while retaining her recurring concern for people whose emotional lives are refracted through animals and altered reality. Its place in Trespass also makes the story part of a curated multi-author project rather than a conventional standalone book release.
