Karl May
Karl May was a German popular novelist widely associated with travel adventures and recurring frontier figures such as Winnetou and Old Shatterhand. Old Firehand und andere Erzählungen, meaning Old Firehand and Other Stories, gathers early shorter narratives in volume 71 of Karl May’s collected works. The Karl-May-Verlag edition includes the title story alongside pieces set in North America, Africa, and the Middle East, with Roland Schmid credited as editor. Publisher and research records trace the original Old Firehand narrative to 1875 and explain that May later reworked parts of the material in Im fernen Westen, or In the Far West, and Winnetou II. The collection therefore offers a view of characters and motifs while they were still developing, before the longer travel novels fixed their familiar forms.
