James Athearn Jones was active as an author in the early nineteenth century, assembling narrative traditions attributed to Indigenous communities. Traditions of the North American Indians, Vol. 1 was published in London in 1830, opening a three-volume revision of Tales of an Indian Camp. Its contents include The Man of Ashes, Pomatare, the Flying Beaver, The Fall of the Lenape, and The Resurrection of the Bison. Jones introduced the collection by describing childhood contact with members of the Gay Head community and travels that he presented as foundations for the tales. Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley published the edition, which Jones dedicated to Washington Irving. The volume belongs to North American Indigenous folklore as filtered through a non-Indigenous writer and the outlook of his era. It consequently preserves stories in a mediated literary form while also documenting nineteenth-century American approaches to oral tradition, cultural authority, and the commercial presentation of collected narratives.
