Kendra Elliot began writing at thirty-eight, in 2006, and it was her third manuscript that sold: Hidden, published in 2012, has since passed a million copies. She has taken the Daphne du Maurier Award for romantic suspense three years running, in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and her books have turned up repeatedly on national bestseller lists; Buried, the third Bone Secrets book, was an International Thriller Writers award finalist. Veiled, from 2013, is a novella slotted between that book and the next, and Alone, from the year after, is the fourth full novel in the run. A Merciful Fate is the fifth case for Mercy Kilpatrick, an FBI agent back in rural Oregon and back among the survivalist family she left, while a later omnibus collects A Merciful Promise, the sixth, alongside earlier entries. Television rights to the series were optioned, but the option lapsed after two years.
