L. Winifred Faraday studied English language and literature before working as a scholar, teacher, translator, and folklorist in Britain. The Edda, Volume 1 introduces the mythological poems of the Poetic Edda, discussing figures such as Odin, Thor, Loki, and the supernatural structure surrounding them. The Edda, Volume 2 turns to heroic material, where inherited conflict, kinship, betrayal, and fate shape the surviving lays. Published as part of David Nutt's Popular Studies in Mythology, Romance and Folklore series, the two compact studies appeared in 1901 and 1902. Faraday later produced an English translation of the Irish epic Táin Bó Cúailnge based on early manuscript versions. Her Edda volumes do not simply retell Norse stories; they introduce textual relationships, scholarly editions, and the problems of interpreting poetry preserved in medieval Icelandic manuscripts. Together they show her interest in making difficult northern European source traditions accessible without separating narrative from philological context.
