Linda Finlay is a British historical novelist whose fiction draws on the communities and traditional industries of Devon. The Royal Lacemaker, her first novel, is set in 1839 as Queen Victoria prepares for her wedding. Its central character, Lily Rose, supports her younger siblings through her skill in Honiton lace and receives a confidential commission connected with the royal wedding dress. The story combines family hardship, local craft, and the pressures surrounding a young working woman in Victorian England. Penguin published the novel in 2014, placing it within Finlay’s continuing interest in regional history and women’s lives. Before publishing novels, she wrote for magazines and annuals and served as an image consultant. Moving to the Devon coast encouraged her to investigate the area’s past, which became a foundation for later books as well. Finlay has described the lacemaking story as growing from shorter commissioned fiction into a full novel, an origin that reflects her movement from magazine writing toward historical sagas.
