Author: Lunsford Lane

Lunsford Lane was a North Carolina entrepreneur, abolitionist, lecturer, and autobiographer who secured freedom for himself and members of his family. Born enslaved in Raleigh in 1803, he developed small businesses, including a profitable tobacco operation, and used his earnings to purchase his freedom in 1835. State law and local hostility later forced him north, but he returned to arrange freedom for his wife and children. The Narrative of Lunsford Lane, Formerly of Raleigh, N. C was first published by Lane in Boston in 1842. Its complete title continues with an account of his early life, self-purchase, family redemption, and banishment for wearing “a colored skin.” The book combines personal testimony with close description of enterprise under bondage and the legal insecurity that followed manumission. Lane later spoke on the abolitionist circuit, worked during the Civil War, and helped establish a school for freed people near New Bern. His narrative was reprinted several times and remains a major firsthand source on nineteenth-century Black life in Raleigh.
