Author: Harriet Jacobs

Harriet Jacobs became an autobiographer, abolitionist, and aid worker whose writing made the particular burdens placed on enslaved women central to the public argument against slavery. Born in Edenton, North Carolina, she endured years of coercion, escaped concealment in a tiny garret, and later secured freedom in the North. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl appeared in 1861 under the name Linda Brent. Addressing women who might have considered slavery distant from domestic life, Jacobs wrote about family separation, threatened motherhood, limited choices, and the complicated meaning of freedom. Abolitionist Lydia Maria Child edited the manuscript, rearranged some sections, and supplied an introduction while preserving Jacobs's authorship and voice. The book's fuller original title ends with Written by Herself, an assertion of authority that matters to its history. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is both a personal narrative and a carefully shaped political work, joining Jacobs's lived experience to her later advocacy and relief efforts.
