M. J. Trow is a British novelist and historian best known for long-running mystery series that combine period knowledge, dry humor, and unconventional investigators. Maxwell’s House introduced Peter Maxwell, an eccentric history teacher and amateur sleuth, in 1994. The story begins after a pupil from Leighford High is found dead in an abandoned house, prompting Maxwell to question both the official inquiry and his own responsibility toward the student. Constable published the original British edition, while St. Martin's Press later issued the novel in the United States. The book opened the Peter Maxwell mysteries, which continued through Maxwell’s Flame, Maxwell’s Movie, Maxwell’s War, and numerous later cases. Trow also created a separate historical sequence around Scotland Yard's Inspector Lestrade and has written nonfiction about historical and criminal subjects. Maxwell’s House established the school setting, skeptical voice, and clash with institutional authority that distinguish Maxwell's investigations from Trow's Victorian crime fiction.
