M Jackson is a misspelled form of the byline Colonel M. Jacson, used by Mainwaring George Jacson (1859-1915), a British Army officer associated with the Devonshire Regiment. His military career included service as a major and brevet lieutenant colonel, and he was later remembered with the rank of brigadier general. Hutchinson & Co. published Record of a Regiment of the Line in 1908. Its fuller title defines the book as a history of the 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment throughout the 1899-1902 South African War. Jacson organizes the account around the approach to Ladysmith, the siege itself, the advance under Sir Redvers Buller, Lydenburg, and later trekking in the northeastern Transvaal. A preface by Lieutenant-General Walter Kitchener places the narrative within the regiment's own military community. Record of a Regiment of the Line combines chronological history with photographs, maps, and observations drawn from battalion experience, preserving a detailed officer's view of those operations and their aftermath.
