About this book
The Anarchy: The Relentless Rise of the East India Company is a 2019 history by William Dalrymple. It tells how a trading company based in London, with a private army, came to rule large parts of India in the eighteenth century while the Mughal Empire declined and regional powers fought for control.
Dalrymple draws on Indian as well as British sources and follows figures such as Robert Clive and the Mughal emperor Shah Alam. The book is also a study of how a corporation can gain political power.
