Martin Davies brings experience as a British novelist and television producer to fiction ranging from historical intrigue to mysteries inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle’s characters. Mrs Hudson and the Spirits’ Curse introduces his alternative view of Baker Street, placing Sherlock Holmes’s housekeeper at the center of an investigation narrated by her young assistant, Flotsam. Mrs Hudson and the Malabar Rose continues that partnership when a celebrated Indian ruby disappears while Holmes and Watson are guarding it. Berkley published the novels in the United States, and Allison & Busby later brought the series to British readers. Davies has explained that the first story grew from his father’s curiosity about what Mrs Hudson might have observed in the famous household. By treating domestic knowledge as evidence, the books let her solve problems that Holmes tends to overlook. Their combination of period mystery, affectionate pastiche, and an unexpectedly formidable investigator established the continuing Mrs Hudson series before Davies turned to novels such as The Conjuror’s Bird.
