Designing Data-Intensive Applications, published by O'Reilly in 2017, works through what happens once data outgrows a single machine: replication, partitioning, transactions, consensus, batch and stream processing, and the guarantee each one actually gives you. Martin Kleppmann wrote it after building large-scale data infrastructure at LinkedIn, which had bought his startup Rapportive in 2012. He is now an associate professor at Cambridge, working on local-first collaboration software and distributed systems security, and helps build the Automerge project. A second edition, written with Chris Riccomini, appeared in 2026.
