Anthony Molinaro

SQL Cookbook is organised as problems rather than as syntax: how to find gaps in a sequence, how to pivot rows into columns, how to walk a hierarchy, each one with the query written out for several different databases. Molinaro worked as a database administrator and consultant, and wrote it because the manuals explain what a command does and not how to get an answer out of a table. The second edition arrived nearly twenty years after the first.
