Mary Augusta Ward

Mary Augusta Ward (1851-1920), who wrote as Mrs. Humphry Ward, was a British novelist, granddaughter of Thomas Arnold and niece of the poet Matthew Arnold. Hugely popular in her day for novels like Robert Elsmere, she was also active in social causes and, controversially, in the anti-suffrage movement.
