Maurene Goo
Throwback (2023) sends Samantha Kang, a Korean American teenager in constant friction with her mother, back to the 1990s, where she meets that same mother at seventeen: a cheerleader with designs on the homecoming crown. The time travel carries a question Maurene Goo keeps returning to, which is what an immigrant family gains and what it gives up across generations. Goo grew up in Glendale, California, the daughter of Korean parents, studied communication and English literature at UC San Diego, and finished an Emerson College master's in publishing and writing. Her first novel, Since You Asked, appeared in 2013; The Way You Make Me Feel took the John and Patricia Beatty Award from the California Library Association. Netflix has optioned I Believe in a Thing Called Love and Somewhere Only We Know. In 2020 she wrote a five issue Marvel run for the Korean American character Silk.
