Mrs Mannington Caffyn published after working as a nurse and living across Ireland, Britain, and colonial Australia. Born Kathleen Mannington Caffyn in 1853, she married a physician, spent years in Australia, and eventually returned to England. Her fiction also appeared under the name Iota, giving her a recognizable place in late Victorian discussions of marriage, independence, and domestic convention. Methuen issued Anne Mauleverer (1899), which bibliographic records connect to her established publishing identity. Caffyn's medical experience and migration supplied perspectives uncommon in a narrowly English drawing-room career, while her novels treated emotional conflict with notable directness. Those circumstances do not reduce her work to autobiography, but they clarify why constrained choices and respectable expectations recur so insistently. Her writing belongs to a transnational fin-de-siècle culture in which women's roles were being debated through fiction.
